Although digital ads have the highest media spend, many consumers are putting down their mobile devices and enjoying their time out of the home. In 2021, digital ads made up 71.1% of the total media spend, while OOH covered only 2.5%. Post-pandemic, many people are eager to travel this summer, either to another city, a resort, or park. In addition to spending more time outside, consumers are putting their mobile devices down and deleting mobile ads. 78% of consumers are annoyed with these ads interrupting their mobile experiences. In addition, 68% often skip these ads due to the digital burnout.
The top OOH advertisers include companies such as McDonalds, Apple, Geico, Google, Allstate, and Amazon. 79% of the top advertisers are increasing their spend on OOH media from 2020. In addition, 28% of these advertisers more than doubled their media spend. You may ask, why do these large and popular companies use OOH? Take McDonalds for example. They use OOH for a variety of services. Billboards on major highways used as directional signage to guide you to their nearest location is an example. Another great example is because they are constantly improving their menu and releasing new products, whether permanent or seasonal. These large brands use OOH to educate consumers of new products or services and continue to encourage them to visit their establishment or use their services. As more consumers are spending time out of the home, companies are looking to OOH to boost their brand exposure as the travel rate is increasing.
